Guest lecture by Britta van Beers, hosted by ASA International Law

Guest lecture by Britta van Beers, hosted by ASA International Law

The revolutionary developments in genetic and stem cell research have enabled sexless reproduction. Prospective parents may choose from dozens of embryos (whose genetic makeup is known) to pick one or two for implantation, gestation, and birth. The ethical and legal challenges as result of implementing these new technologies will be discussed in this lecture.

What are the meaning of humanity and human rights when we can design our offspring? Are ‘PGD’ (preimplantation genetic diagnosis) and IVF (vitro fertilization) the end of sex and future of reproduction?

Britta van Beers is associate professor at the VU University Law school. In her teaching and research she explores the legal-philosophical aspects of biomedical technologies, including assisted reproduction.”
